How to Set Up a Complete Skateboard from Scratch

Building your own skateboard might seem difficult if you've never done it before, but it's actually a straightforward process. Once you understand how each part fits together, setting up a complete skateboard becomes much easier. It's also a great way to learn more about your board and makes future maintenance much less intimidating.

Whether you're building your first setup or replacing old parts, here's how to assemble a complete skateboard from scratch.

What You'll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have all the essential parts:

  • Skateboard deck
  • Grip tape
  • Two trucks
  • Four wheels
  • Eight bearings
  • Hardware bolts and nuts
  • A skate tool

Having everything ready before you start will make the process much smoother.

Step 1: Apply the Grip Tape

Carefully place the grip tape on top of the deck and press it down evenly.

Work from one end to the other to avoid air bubbles. Once it's fully attached, trim the edges with a sharp blade for a clean finish. Good grip tape gives your feet the traction they need while riding and performing tricks.

Step 2: Install the Trucks

Insert the hardware bolts through the deck and line up the trucks underneath.

Make sure the kingpins face toward the centre of the skateboard. Tighten each bolt until the trucks feel secure, but avoid tightening them more than necessary.

Step 3: Install the Bearings

Each wheel needs two bearings.

Place a bearing into the wheel, then use the truck axle to press it into place. Turn the wheel over and repeat the process with the second bearing. The bearings should sit evenly inside the wheel without forcing them.

Step 4: Attach the Wheels

Slide each wheel onto the truck axle, then replace the washer and axle nut.

Tighten the nut until the wheel is secure while still spinning freely. If the wheel doesn't spin smoothly, loosen the nut slightly.

Step 5: Give Everything a Final Check

Before your first ride, inspect your skateboard one last time.

Make sure all the hardware is tight, the trucks are secure, and the wheels spin without resistance. Stand on the board and make sure everything feels comfortable before heading out.

Final Thoughts

Building your own skateboard is easier than most beginners expect, and it's a useful skill that every skater should learn. Once you've assembled your first setup, maintaining or upgrading your board becomes much simpler.

If you're choosing parts for a new build, don't compare skateboard price alone. A quality skateboard made with reliable components will ride better, last longer, and give you more confidence every time you skate. Whether you're putting together your first skateboard for adults or creating a custom setup, taking the time to build it properly is always worth it.
